CBIBS Buoy Data Helps Scientists Research Irene, Lee Effects

Submitted by david.riddel on 09/15/2011

NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office scientists have been busy in the wake of Hurricane Irene (August 27-28) and the flooding rainfall associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee (week of September 5).

Learn more about how buoy data is supporting efforts to track information about Hurricane Irene's effects on the Bay and to investigate the plume created by sediment released from behind the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River related to the flooding from Lee.

You can track the plume's progress down the Bay by graphing data from CBIBS buoys and focusing on turbidity and salinity.

Samples taken from on-the-water work are currently being analyzed in laboratories; stay tuned for results!
